Oh Yeah, It's Winter

In my last entry I posted an image from warm Mexico. In this post I thought I'd better get back to reality. We live in Alberta. It's January. It's winter. It is easy to focus on the negatives of winter in Alberta which can basically be summed up in one word: COLD. But from a photographers perspective, one has to admit that there are some positives. The clean, crisp look after a fresh snowfall is beautiful (as long as it isn't minus 30). The late sunrises and early sunsets make it easier to get those shots with amazing color in the sky (as long as it isn't minus 30). Produce a photograph that combines amazing light reflecting off hoarfrost covered trees and you have a postcard (again, as long as it isn't minus 30). And finally, if you have saved a few bucks, maybe a short reprieve in a tropical location can break up the monotony of winter and provide other photographic opportunities ( as long as it IS minus 30).
I took the photographs below while driving along a rural road in central Alberta. It was late afternoon, the sun is lower in the sky which produced interesting shadows and the light reflected off the crystals in the snow. Only in winter.

  1. I am all for the tropical...ahhhh....warmth! And I don't like the bitter cold....but I do love the winter snow...so clean and crisp! Every season has it's blessings! Just gotta look a little harder in the winter. But your photos show some hope for the season! Awesome photos Andrew!
