When Skies Are Blah...I Mean Blue

There is no question, when it comes to creating dramatic landscape photographs, lighting is extremely important. Before, during, and after sunrises and sunsets, seem to produce the best results. That is not to say that other times of the day are not appropriate for photos. I believe that you can create great images any time, as long as the subject and composition are interesting. Important in landscape photography is not only the land but also the sky. In fact, in many cases, it is the sky that makes the image. If a landscape photographer is not able to photograph at the prime shooting times then, at the very least, he wants an interesting sky.
Lately, we have had some beautiful weather. Warm temperatures and sunny blue skies. Great for sun tanning, not so great for dramatic landscape images. What do you do? Get creative! There is a lot of different types of post processing software available to play around with to make a boring photograph interesting. One thing a person can do is add a texture to the photo as I did below. I took this photograph in the late morning and the sky was absolutely blah, I mean blue. If I was there in the early morning or late evening, I might have had some incredible light to work with. But that doesn't mean I shouldn't try to create something. I could return at another time, but in this case, that is no guarantee my subject will be there. So, make lemonade out of lemons.
In the photo below, I liked the subject. I also liked the composition. But the sky was boring. Add a little texture to the image, and now I think I have something interesting. Click on the picture for a better look.
