The Rescue

        I took this photograph in Boca de Tomatlan, a small fishing village in Jalisco state, Mexico.I enjoy wandering around looking for candid shots of people especially when their culture differs from our own in some way.
       When I saw this young girl carrying her dog, much like a mother carries a baby, I was reminded of the bond between children and their pets. This image, with a little work, had the potential to tell a story.
       I had no idea why she was hurrying down this rough road in bare feet cradling this animal. I don't even know if it was her dog. It could have been the neighbors dog and had just gotten into their garbage for all I knew. But that's the interesting thing about photography. Different people can view one image in different ways. I thought she was saving her dog. ( probably not, but who cares?)
       With this in mind I converted the image to black and white and played with contrast levels and sharpness to give it a more dramatic look. This photo was actually taken in the middle of the day. But now, after a little imagination, the image is portraying a young girl, in the middle of the night, rushing her best friend down a dangerous street to safety!
