Ice Bells

It has been a little cold around here lately and most in Alberta are ready for spring. Even so, one has to admit that there are aspects to winter that are interesting as well as beautiful. Below is a photograph of 'ice bells'. These ice formations are quite unique. Most icicles that we are are familiar with have a 'carrot' shape, the top is wide and then tapers down to a point at the bottom. Ice bells do the opposite. They are narrower at the top and get wider towards the bottom, bell shaped. It is my understanding that these ice formations are usually found around running water. Perhaps it is the splashing of the stream or some type of water vapor generated by the running water that causes these interesting icicles. I'll have to research that a little more when I have more time. I converted the image to black and white as it seemed to simplify the scene and brought out the textures in the ice a little more. 1. Well...I think this one is my favorite! Very well done Andrew. And I love that you changed it to b&w...I would think in color may be to much going on. This way the focus is obvious...ice bells!

  3. I hadn't heard of them either, don't recall ever seeing them. Love the picture Andrew, I know that being 'into' photography really opens your eyes to a world of interesting things that you normally wouldn't even notice. Keep up the good work!
